What is Bromantane?

Bromantane is a nootropic compound that was developed in Russia in 1980 known to have potent psychostimulatory and anxiolytic effects. It is considered a part of the adamantane family and is closely related to both memantine and amantadine. Bromantane is considered an actoprotector, meaning it plays a vital role in enhancing physical performance in extreme environmental conditions. In addition to its psychostimulatory and anxiolytic effects, the compound has been found to inhibit fatigue, improve coordination, and promote learning.

Generally, bromantane works by increasing brain activity. The compound works through the dopaminergic system by increasing the activity of tyrosine hydroxylase and decarboxylase. This allows for increased production of dopamine through the activation of tyrosine. Additionally, bromantane is involved in increasing levels of serotonin in the brain. Bromantane’s ability to increase dopamine and serotonin production leads to feelings of happiness and an increase in energy and alertness [1].

Main Research Findings on Bromantane

1. Bromantane is capable of manipulating behavior in a dose-dependent manner by changing expression of dopamine, muscarinic, and cholinergic receptors

2. Bromantane is able to improve physical performance by increasing epinephrine and noradrenaline.

Selected Data

1. Experiments were conducted with 200 male or female adult albino rats, ranging from 150-200 grams in weight. Bromantane was administered to the rat in increasing doses ranging from 30-9600 mg/kg. 5 male and 5 female rats were separated into groups while the effects of bromantane were measured by observing behavioral activity, spontaneous motor activity, and pain sensitivity. After bromantane was administered the animals were monitored for 12 hours straight. This examination occurred daily over the course of 2 weeks.

2. Random-bred mice and rats were categorized into two groups and administered varying doses of 0.5-50 mg/kg of bromantane or phenamine, another popular enhancement compound. The mice and rats underwent a swimming test and a treadmill test in order to observe changes in their physical performance and compare the two compounds. Additionally, the researchers compared the improvement in physical ability to changes in epinephrine and noradrenaline levels.

Discussion

1. Evidence shows that bromantane has many other beneficial effects such as the improvement of brain functioning and physical activity as well as the reduction of inflammation. In regards to brain functioning, researchers Iezhitsa et. Al examined how varying doses of 30-300 mg/kg were found to stimulate behavioral activity while doses 300-600 mg/kg suppressed behavioral activity. Additionally, spontaneous motor activity was increased in doses from 30-300 mg/kg and inhibited in doses above 600 mg/kg. Pain sensitivity was decreased in doses ranging from 300-600 mg/kg while the pain threshold was increased in doses above 600 mg. These reported results indicate that the beneficial effects of bromantane work in a dose-dependent manner. The researchers found that any behavioral changes were due to the stimulation of the dopaminergic systems and the suppression of nicotinic cholinergic and muscarinic structures [2].

2. Bromantane has also shown promise in improving physical activity by increasing levels of epinephrine and norepinephrine. It allows for them to stay in the bloodstream for longer periods of time rather than being excreted. Following administration of bromantane in doses varying from 0.5-50 mg/kg, the compound was found to be 1.3-1.6 times more effective than similar popular enchantment compound, phenamine, when administered in optimal doses.

Essentially, bromantane works to delay the decrease of physical performance while restoring it faster and more efficiently. This was supported by the successful results of the repeated treadmill tests the mice and rats completed that corresponded with increased levels of epinephrine and noradrenaline. The compound was also found to prevent changes of the electrons found in cardiomyocytes and myocyte mitochondria of skeletal muscles. Researchers were able to conclude that bromantane improves physical activity not only through its notable psychostimulatory effects related to brain functioning, but also through membrane-protective effects [3].
