Benefits of L-Theanine

L-theanine is a naturally occurring amino acid known for its role in reducing levels of stress and anxiety. Following supplementation with L-theanine, the compound passes the blood-brain-barrier and increases the rate of alpha waves in the brain, leading to the feeling of relaxation without increased drowsiness. Various animal-based studies have emphasized the many benefits of L-theanine such as relaxation, better sleep, and improved cognition, to name a few. Evidence has shown that L-theanine can also play a role in weight loss, reducing blood pressure, and amplifying anti-tumor effects.

What’s interesting about L-theanine is that it is abundantly found in common cups of green and black tea. This is what initially led researchers to believe that it could potentially play a role in relaxation, as a cup of tea is often sipped to reduce anxiety. However, various animal-based studies have found that the compound itself brings on these feelings of relaxation and stress reduction. Essentially these trials placed different animals into stressful situations such as extreme cold or controlled swim tests both before and after being administered a dose of L-theanine. Compared to a placebo group, results showed a drastic decrease in stress responses following treatment with L-theanine.

Additionally, research has found that L-theanine is capable of improving overall cognitive health such as anxiety, depression, memory, and learning. The compound also tends to have neuroprotective effects, however, more research must be conducted to solidify this claim. On its own, L-theanine shows promise in improving alertness and reaction time. Research is currently being conducted in mice examining how these effects are amplified when the compound is combined with caffeine.

L-theanine also has the potential to reduce blood pressure following stressful scenarios, most likely due to its ability to promote relaxation and stress-relief. Notable animal-based studies examined how various doses of L-theanine work to reduce blood pressure. Doses of 225 mg and 400 mg were shown to be most effective after the subjects were placed under stress. These studies also emphasized that a dose of L-theanine was also capable of stopping a rise in blood pressure in test subjects that already had high blood pressure. Similar studies also examined how L-theanine can potentially improve sleep. Again, various doses of the compound were tested, however, it was found that 200 mg was the most effective dose in lowering heart rate in order to promote sleep and relaxation.

Furthermore, L-theanine’s ability to support chemotherapy drugs has also been observed. Researchers provided a diet high in L-theanine to female animals experiencing different stages of ovarian cancer. Overall, the subjects consuming more of the compound tended to live longer than those that did not. While this conclusion is promising, far more research must be conducted in order to determine how L-theanine is able to support anti-tumor agents (https://www.healthline.com/health/l-theanine#risks-and-side-effects).

Effects of L-Theanine on Stress-Related Behavior

In order to observe the effects that L-theanine has on stress and anxiety, researchers Dramard et. Al tested the compound on cats under field conditions. The study began with 33 cats all exhibiting signs of fear or stress such as inappropriate urination, aggressiveness, and hypervigilance, for over one month. The cats were given 25 mg of L-theanine twice daily over a period of 30 days. 20 different stress related parameters were tested on day 0, 15, and 30 of the experiment.

Overall the results found that all 20 of the parameters were reduced by the day 30 evaluation. Additionally, 91% of the cats had a reduced global score by day 30 and 64% of the cats had a reduction greater than 50%. On day 0, the median global score was 18, on day 15 the score was 11, and on day 30 the score had decreased down to 5. The owners of the cats all reported that their stress related behavior had dramatically decreased, in particular the event of inappropriate urination. The cats also seemed to tolerate the treatment very well with no incidence of side effects.

The study emphasized that there is a clear trend between supplementation of L-theanine and stress reduction. However, it has been determined that further research should be conducted due to the absence of a control group. By adding a control group the researchers will be able to better confirm and solidify the results of this experiment (https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/30338056/).
