Researched Benefits of Laxogenin

Laxogenin is a plant hormone that is commonly categorized as a brassinosteroid. Brassinosteroids are considered phytohormones and act similarly to anabolic steroids in mammals or insect ecdysteroids by promoting plant growth and development. These compounds are comparable to various animal hormones in the way that they affect different aspects of growth and synthesization such as cell elongation, cell division, immunity, and reproduction.

Due to the similarity between anabolic steroids and brassinosteroids, recent research has been conducted in order to see how laxogenin and similar compounds stimulate muscle growth and recovery. Differing from anabolic steroids, laxogenin tends to only bind to the surface of a cell. This leads to an influx of signals that ultimately result in increased muscle growth within the cell. The laxogenin-induced signals go on to activate the Akt or the PI3K pathways. These pathways are marked as crucial regulators of muscular hypertrophy as they release insulin growth factor (IGF) when activated. Hypertrophy rapidly occurs and protein synthesis and degradation continues to be actively regulated.

This mechanism of action is supported by a notable study conducted by Esposito et. Al, rodents were given various doses of laxogenin in order to determine what effects it has on lean body mass. The subjects were given either 20 mg or 60 mg of laxogenin over a 24 day period. Overall, the study concluded that the 20 mg group had a 7% increase in lean muscle and a 3.9% reduction in body fat while the 60 mg group had a 14.2% increase in lean muscle and a 4.9% reduction in body fat. These results were found through the use of a DEXA scan. Furthermore, it is important to note that the growth benefits of brassinosteroids did not lead to any changes in sex hormones, thus reducing many of the negative androgenic side effects that are associated with anabolic steroids (https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3177571/).

In addition to the promotion of muscle growth, laxogenin also has the potential to accelerate fat breakdown by increasing levels of cAMP receptors. The ability of laxogenin to increase fat loss has shown to also be supported via activation of the sympathetic nervous system. Current research has found that the sympathetic nervous system plays an important role in the regulation of lipolysis. Furthermore, animal-based evidence has shown that total body fat is potentially modulated through the sympathetic innervation of white adipose tissue. Researchers Hursel et. Al further explained that the fat breakdown caused by laxogenin can be supported when thermogenic agents, such as caffeine, are administered at the same time. Combined supplementation led to drastic improvements in metabolic targets such as thermogenesis, oxidation of fat, and satiety (https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/20142827/).

Secondary benefits of laxogenin include the reduction of cortisol and improved muscle recovery. Cortisol has been shown to increase the preservation of body fat while inhibiting protein synthesis and muscle building. Studies have found that administering laxogenin led to lower cortisol levels in animal test subjects, which in turn led to improved muscle growth that was not seen in control groups. Further research has observed the ability of laxogenin to neutralize oxidative stress in cells. Notable studies concluded that reduced oxidative stress aids in muscle recovery and lowers instances of delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS) (https://www.momarketplace.com/supplement-articles/laxogenin/).

Popular Derivative of Laxogenin: 5-Alpha Hydroxy Laxogenin

Synthetically derived from laxogenin, 5-alpha hydroxy laxogenin is another popular compound that has been shown to improve muscle growth. 5-alpha hydroxy laxogenin is typically derived from the plant Smilax Sieboldii, however, when used for research purposes the compound is produced from the plant-based raw material, diosgenin. Diosgenin is typically used in pharmaceutical prep for synthetic steroidal drugs.

While research on 5-alpha hydroxy laxogenin is limited, reported effects state that the compound works by increasing the rate of protein synthesis while simultaneously decreasing the rate at which protein breaks down. The net positive effect that 5-alpha hydroxy laxogenin has on protein synthesis indicates that supplementation will ultimately lead to an increase in lean muscle mass. Similar to laxogenin, this compound is unique due to the fact that it does not lead to any changes throughout the endocrine system like various other selective androgen receptor modulators.
