5-alpha hydroxy laxogenin is a plant-derived polyhydroxylated derivative of 5a-cholestane, similar to anabolic steroids in mammals or insect ecdysteroids. that is derived from the compound laxogenin. Studies show that 5-alpha hydroxy laxogenin acts as an alternative option to anabolic steroids. Laxogenin belongs to a family of compounds called brassinosteroids. Furthermore, studies also show that laxogenin is found throughout the structure of the plant and has been known to drive the growth of the plant.
A fascinating experiment conducted by Esposito et. Al studies the effects that a similar compound, 28-Homobrassinolide (HB) has on the lean body mass of test rodents. Over a 24 day period rodents were given doses of either 20 mg or 60 mg. Through the use of a DEXA scan, it was found that the group of rodents being treated with 20 mg had a 7% increase in lean muscle mass while the group being treated with 60 mg had a 14.2% increase in lean muscle mass. Additionally, the 20 mg treatment group lost 3.9% body fat while the 60 mg group had a 4.9% reduction in body fat. HB treatment was also associated with an increase in strength without additional training, as the rats exhibited a 6.7 percent increase in grip strength of the lower extremities.
